FEATURES СHAMELEON 32+

СHAMELEON 32+

In railway technologies of individual rail sections secondary testing, as well as elements of turnouts, a single–rail  flaw detector СHAMELEON 32+  (version 16/64, support for four 16-element probes PA 2,5Mhz). Manually-driven; rail testing speed is up to 4 km/h.
Figure 1. Scanning scheme

1- backward oriented beam PA probe to scan a rail head at drive angle range of 50 ° - 70°, a rail web and its projection to a head and base at drive angle range of 40 ° - 50 ° and 0 ° ;
2,3 - forward oriented beam PA probes to scan a rail head at drive angle range of 50 ° - 60 ° oriented to running and non-running faces of the rail head at 34°;
4 - forward oriented beam PA probe to scan a rail head at drive angle range of 50 ° - 70°; a rail web and its projection into the head and base at drive angle range of 40 ° - 50°.

The working set includes: a specialized single-rail scanner (search system) with pre-installed phased array probes, an electronic unit of the flaw detector, a couplant tank and a control tablet (PC). At the bottom of the photo are two versions - transport and work.

Electronic control of ultrasonic beam input angle and analysis of reflected echoes allow real-time formation of S-scan on the screen of the flaw detector in the form of a two-dimensional cross-section image. S-scan not only provides the operator with visual information about the location and coordinates of defects, but also allows in many cases to measure their real dimensions.

CHAMELEON 32+ enables to directan ultrasonic beam at different angles and focus it at any depth, which significantly increases detection reliability of variously located defects.

The main scope - incident confirmations/removals by results of primary control by mobile means or selective control of separate sections of rails with formation of the protocol of control and its transfer to the dispatching center.

Features and benefits CHAMELEON 32+:

  • Detection of all types of defects according to the Russian Railways classifier during manual inspection;

  •  Detection, recording and decoding of signals from defects in rails;

  • Continuous recording (registration) of inspection results as flaw patternsof controlled zones, with reference to rack coordinates;

  • Information is presented in B - type scan format, with data on the amplitude-time characteristics of recorded echoes;

  • Functions "auto arrange" and "auto protocol" generate an inspection protocol enabling instant transfer to a control station via GSM communication;

  • Ability to detect contact fatigue defects under horizontal metal stratification on rolling surface during ultrasonic testing with multichannel phased array transducers
